A man with a passion for quality dogs

A PGA golf professional by trade, Dave Alvarez has balanced his love of golf with his passion for gun dogs for the past 57 years.

Dog man Dave Alvarez--57 years of dogs

Raised in upstate New York, Dave was hunting whitetails, catching trout on a dry fly, and running white hare over beagles as a young boy. As a teenager, he began field trialing beagles under the tutorship of legendary Hall of Famer Clarence Jones. His first job as a professional dog handler was with the U.S. Air Force as a military policeman in Vietnam in 1968, where he lived through the Tet Offensive. When his dog died of heartworm, Dave was reassigned to an Army helicopter battalion, where he flew 168 combat missions as a door gunner. After his military service, Dave started training and competing with retrievers when he moved to eastern Long Island in 1976. By 1994, when he relocated his family to Basalt, Colorado, Dave had years of upland and waterfowl hunting guide experience and was handling and competing with pointers and retrievers in both NSTRA and AKC hunt tests. He has owned three AKC Master Hunter Labradors.

Guiding bird hunts all over the country--based in Colorado

Currently Dave’s home base is in Hotchkiss, Colorado, where he keeps a kennel of top-of-the-line English setters, as well as top candidates of all breeds for the OutWest Gun Dogs brokerage. Dave has guided for many venues, including pheasant hunts at the prestigious Sutton Bay club in South Dakota; quail hunts at Bray’s Island Plantation in South Carolina; Hemingway Lodge and Hawk’s Nest Lodge in Greeley, Colorado for waterfowl and pheasants; OutWest Guides in Marble, Colorado for blue grouse and ptarmigan; waterfowl, pheasants, and chukar at Scenic Mesa Ranch in Hotchkiss, Colorado; and ocean waterfowl hunts for broadbill and bluebill on Long Island, New York.

All the birds you can hunt with a pointing dog in North America

As an avid upland bird hunting and waterfowl hunting enthusiast, Dave has hunted most of the states and provinces in North America. He has hunted all the grouse species in North America—sage, sharptail, ruffed, blue, greater prairie chicken, lesser prairie chicken, and spruce grouse—and all the upland game species in North America. Dave prefers to shoot only staunchly pointed birds with smaller-gauge American-made guns.

Classic American shotguns--Parker, LC Smith, Winchester, Browning, Fox

In addition to his extensive knowledge about gun dogs, Dave is also an expert on American firearms, particularly early 20th-century side-by-side shotguns such as Fox, Parker, Stevens, LC Smith, Winchester, Browning, and Remington. He is often asked to locate shotguns and collectible guns for specific clients, and he is experienced with shotgun fitting and instruction.

PGA professional, Player of the Year, Director of Golf

On the golf course, Dave has competed in 7 U.S. Opens; 3 Senior U.S. Opens; and was named the PGA Player of the Year four times in Vermont and Colorado. He has been the Head Professional and Director of Golf at several exclusive clubs in New York and Colorado.
